Personal development, health and physical education

Personal development, health and physical education (PDHPE) is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.

PDHPE provides students with opportunities to explore issues that are likely to impact on the health, safety and wellbeing of themselves and others – now and in the future. Students also participate in challenging and enjoyable physical activity, improving their capacity to move with skill and confidence.

Hurstville Grove Infants School offers an extensive sports program for your child. We offer a wide range of sporting opportunities for students throughout the year including: fundamental and locomotive movement skills, dance, swimming, yoga, gymnastics, cricket, oz tag, soccer, and other intensive sports skills programs. Additionally, we work with a network of five Infants schools, allowing students to participate in an annual athletics carnival.

SWIMMING

The K-2 Swimming Scheme is an annual program, where students participate in structured swimming lessons at their ability under the guidance of qualified instructors at Hurstville Aquatic Centre.

DANCE

Qualified dance instructors are employed for a term each year to introduce and support the dance component of the creative arts curriculum. In 2016, HGIS is investigating the establishment of a Year One and Two performing dance troop that will represent the school at events such as the St George Performing Arts evening.

YOGA

For one term students will be introduced to the foundations of Yoga to connect with their inner self, stretch and further develop their balance and fundamental movement skills.  A qualified instructor comes to the school and teaches the students how they can believe in themselves and build a strong physical, mental and emotional foundation.

GYMNASTICS

Students will be introduced to the fundamental skills of gymnastics via a 9 week program with a qualified instructor.  Gymnastics is part of the PDHPE curriculum and will teach your child how to improve their overall fitness, strength, balance and body control.

FITNESS

The students at The Grove participate in regular fitness activities throughout the week to reinforce skills and maintain their fitness levels. This is a requirement of the PDHPE curriculum.

Hurstville Grove Infants School offers a large grassy area for students to play in during lunch and fruit breaks as well as a multi-purpose soft fall playground. This allows students to explore and develop their fundamental movement skills and rules of the game within a safe and nurturing environment.
